Maggie

“I’ve decided that I like him for you,” Raven declared, swigging from her can of hard seltzer.

She was curled up on Maggie’s couch, still in her scrubs, her stethoscope and lab coat discarded on the table in her front hall. She’d just gotten off her last shift for “three whole days” (her words) and was looking to get wild.

Which, by their standards, meant having a couple of drinks, watching some reality TV, and getting their knit on.

This, by the way, was the norm, even when slightly less than half of their number were pregnant.

A few drinks. Some yarn and fancy, sparkly needles (of the knitting variety, and for the record, she was the only one with the rhinestone-encrusted needles). Shows of a questionable quality (the more questionable, the better). Lots of snacks (and thank God she could finally enjoy them with knowing they’d just end up in a much less pleasing form in the toilet). And talking—about nothing, about anything, about everything…and about all things in between.

“When did we ever not like him for her?” Misty pointed out.

Raven saluted her with her can. “Good point.”

Frankie extended a chip, cheers-ed it with Raven’s can. “Agreed.”

Soph smiled softly. “Carter is perfect for you.”

Mags bit her lip, holding her can of non-alcoholic seltzer (aka decaffeinated soda). “But do you think I’m good for him?” She glanced down at her belly. Still flat, but no longer concave because of her recent cupcake consumption. “He says he doesn’t care, and I want to believe that, and I was believing that, but…”

She was going for it.

She was just…was it selfish to go for it?

And God, she was tired of these mental circles. She said she was giving him, them, a chance. Why was she uncertain now?

Probably because she’d spent the day planning for a future with a baby that wasn’t his.

She groaned, dropping her head into her hands.

Misty squeezed her shoulder. “This isn’t like you to waffle, Mags.”

“I know,” she moaned. “It’s just when Carter is here, he’s so sweet and amazing and he orgasms me into thinking that it’s totally not a big deal—”

Sophie choked.

“Sorry, Soph,” she said on a wince, glancing up at her friend.

A grin. “Don’t worry, I’m a good actress,” Soph teased. “I can pretend he’s not my brother for the purposes of this conversation.”

The hold on her lungs relaxed. “Okay, good.”

“Good for us,” Soph said lightly. “Because you’re going to break down everything you’re feeling for us, and then we get to give you all of our advice because we’re good like that.”

Frankie grinned. “And we like passing judgment.”

Raven swatted her. “It’s not judgment. It’s…putting your fears to rest.”

“And a little bit of judgment,” Misty joked. “But mostly over your yarn combinations.”

She made a face, held up her work in progress. “I think they look good together.”

“So says the girl with the sparkling knitting needles,” Frankie said, her brows waggling.

A pout. “And these”—she held them up—“look good, too!”

“Damn right they do,” Misty said, glaring at Frankie. “I don’t carry ugly items at Tangled.
